EU’s New PPWR Packaging Rule Goes Live: What It Means for Tin Packaging (August 12, 2026)

Starting August 12, 2026, the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (EU) 2025/40 (PPWR) will replace the 1994/62/EC Packaging Directive—overhauling rules for tin packaging, tin cans, and tin boxes across the 27 EU nations and European Economic Area (EEA) countries.

For companies producing or selling tin packaging (like food-safe tin cans and decorative tin boxes), the new mandates include:
Sustainability Rules: All tin packaging must meet strict recyclability and reusability standards. PVC linings are banned entirely from tin cans and tin boxes to lower environmental footprint.

Eco-Impact Disclosure: Food-grade tin packaging (such as tin cans for tea or spices) must include full life-cycle environmental data, covering manufacturing, use, and disposal.

Labeling Requirements: Tin boxes and tin cans need clear material composition labels and standardized recycling symbols. Tin packaging for child-resistant  products must also feature child-resistant warning labels.
The PPWR’s goal is to slash packaging waste by 50% by 2030—making compliant tin packaging a must for businesses targeting the EU. Brands using tin cans or tin boxes must update their designs, materials, and labeling by August 2026 to avoid EU market barriers.
